About the FRM

by David Harper, CFA, FRM, CIPM

Exams |

The Financial Risk Manager (FRM) is the gold standard among risk professionals. The certification and its exam are administered by the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP). Traditionally, Certified Financial Risk Managers (Certified FRMs) were associated with banking. While roughly one-third of FRM candidates are indeed employed at banks, the FRM certification is increasingly relevant to many financial and corporate sectors. The broader application of risk is reflected in several recent additions to the curriculum, including:

  • Greater emphasis on derivatives
  • Pension plan risk
  • Risks associated with fund styles and fund strategies
  • Hedge fund risk

To earn the FRM certification, a candidate must:

  • Pass the FRM exam,
  • Obtain at least two years of relevant work experience, and
  • Be an active member of GARP

The FRM exam is (currently) administered once each year, in November. The exam is five hours (2.5 hours before lunch and 2.5 again after lunch) and consists roughly of 140 to 150 multiple-choice questions. It is widely considered to be a very tough exam.

You can learn more about the exam's five modules by viewing this nine (9) minute movie by our founder, David Harper.

The FRM is not the only certification devoted to the risk-based professional. The FRM, administered by GARP, competes directly with the Professional Risk Manager (PRM) certification, which is administered by PRMIA.
