FRM 2007: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

by David Harper, CFA, FRM, CIPM

FRM | |

Is it everything I need?

Yes, our package offers everything you need to pass the exam, but three caveats:

  1. You must reserve the time to prepare;
  2. You should read all of the assigned readings (the source material) at least once. Anyone who tells you that you can skip the readings is not helping you. Some certification tests can be gamed. The FRM cannot be gamed: GARP is good at selecting questions that truly test comprehension. This is a very tough exam and there are no shortcuts.
  3. You should purchase the FRM Sample Review Test Interactive CD from GARP for $35. Our materials do not include a full-length exam, so this is the ideal complement.

Do I need internet access? When does the material get mailed to me?

No material is shipped. The study notes are downloadable Adobe PDFs. The movies and questions only require a high-speed internet connection, a browser, and flash installed (flash is free). So, yes, you definitely need an internet connection. We have offered a shipping option in the past, but almost everybody prefers instant access once they understand it!

  1. how do i order

  2. John,

You go here: http://www.bionicturtle.com/register/buy. This is registration, we’d like you to fill out a few fields. After you submit, you will be sent to the payment page. Once paid, you will return to the site but, since you will be paid, the FRM page will be visible to you (it’s pretty obvious, the yellow tab at the end of the navigation).

Please let me know if you have any trouble, we’ve tried to make this very easy. When you return to the site, it should recognize you.

    Thanks!

  3. Mr. David Harper, CFA,FRM

Looking at the program so far I am impressed. I have been in the financial industry for some time now and have arrived at a crossroad. Can you share the pros and the cons between the CFA and the FRM designations and which roads would be best to travel in this economic climate?

  4. I do not have a high speed internet connection. In this case will it take much time to view the movies ?

How effective and focussed are the study notes for exam preparation do I also need to read the assigned readings given by GARP over and above your notes?

When can we order the study package as the AIMS are not yet given by GARP

  5. David—I purchased Bio-Turt approximately three days before the Nov 06 FRM exam.  Was I only purchasing three days’ worth?  May I continue using now?  Since I’ve seen the full program and how it relates to the exam, I have lots of feedback to offer to the Web; I’ll appreciate a response.

    Thanks --

    jwk

  6. Derek: we will post something on that over in the exams section.

Paul: the study notes address every AIM - each AIM is matched with content. It is a comprehensive outline. But, you should still read the source materials. I have not met the person who can comprehend all of this in one reading - notes + outlines + movies + questions - you need redundant exposure. You can preorder, but the 2007 product doesn’t become available (of course) until after we see the AIMs. So, it’s a preorder right now. GARP keeps telling me AIMs are on the way, so I hope to get them and be able to publish the full schedule next week.

jwk: Yes, of course you can stay on. Thank you for your offer of feedback. We are going to install a forum. I am excited about the quality of this year’s movies, but we very much want feedback, so maybe i can contact you directly if you have some preliminary thoughts?

  7. When you say read the ‘assigned readings’ from GARP, do you mean that you recommend that we purchase all the Core Readings from GARP over and above your course?

    Manu

  8. Hi Manu,

Yes, it is my recommendation regardless of your course provider. In our program, the notes outline all of the LOs. Plus the movies review them. Plus the questions are sorted by them. If you do all of that, theoretically you don’t need the original source material because we cover it. But our outline notes cut right to the chase, so they are better as supplements.

And, if the goal is to pass the test, it is not the best plan to skip the original material. Course providers who imply you should do this are not helping you; the material churns significantly each year. Few can review the material once and pass the exam. Ideally, you need to see some of the concepts about three times and then practice questions. Repetition. Repetition.

  9. Hi David !

The payment thru PAYPAL is really a pain !.

I logged in with Paypal..paid them 1.95USD for the extended use since the payment exceeds 100USD for the purchase.

Now when i log in with the extended number, it gives a message “Payment thru Credit Card cannot be done now”.....

This is a wierd and a strange problem. I request you to kindly look into the same at the soonest so that i can go ahead and buy your product

  10. I am a software engg. working for a Investment bank and I want to pursue my career in Quantitative analysis in Investment Banking company only can you just help me out that how effective and relevant this course will be for me to pursue my career in Quantitative analysis.

  11. Hi David !

I have been trying to purchase your product since last 5 days.....but due to some problem with PAYPAL, my transaction is not going through successfully....

Once I click on “Puchase Now” tab on your website, I’am being directed to PAYPAL site. My email address appears on the PAYPAL Website and then I provide for the password for logging in. But it says “This payment cannot be funded with a Credit Card at this time”....

I also tried making payment without logging into my paypal account. There I provide all the details required (Like Cr Card Details, Shipping Add, Name etc etc ) but it directs to some other page and says “Click Here to RETRY”....this same message I’m getting whenever I tried - may be more than 10 times till now…

Even after clicking on the tab “Click here to retry”, there is no progress.....

PLS HELP AT YOUR EARLIEST !!! I WANT TO START MY STUDIES FOR FRM AT THE EARLIEST !!!!!!!!!!!!

    Regards,
    Chintan

  12. Hi Chintan,

I regret the PayPal inconvenience. I’ve spoken with PayPal and they assure me the “shopping cart” accepts payments. PayPal has built-in security measures, some of which are beyond your control and mine. In general, they are for everybody’s benefit. Unfortunately, in particular (and again, this would be beyond your control), like other PayPal shopping carts, I have greater difficulty accepting payment in certain countries where anti-fraud epayment mechanisms are less robust.

Please note: in most cases, the problem is merely that PayPal forces a delay instead of instant verification.

But, when compared to alternatives, we looked at several alternatives and PayPal, despite imperfections, gives us the widest reach in accepting payments globally.

  13. Hi David !

Finally I could buy the product thru the paypal....fortunately I’ll be able to start off with my studies soon…

Can you please guide me as to where a student should start studying from ...It would be great if you can include this as a part of the welcome note to all the students…

    Would appreciate your quick response..

    Kind regards..

  14. Hello David

I am going on vacation for two weeks at the end of July and would like to continue my studies while abroad.  Time is precious so will even be studying on the 7 hour flight!  Are the movies available in a podcast?

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

    Regards

    Claire

  15. Hi Claire,

They really are not designed for an (audio-only) podcast: so much of the emphasis is on the visual slides (and equations). The tutorials are deployed in three formats: flash (.swf), flash video (for lower bandwith) plus I recently added a download feature.

Further, the PowerPoint slides can be downloaded - these have turned out to be popular with customers as flashcards.

I hope that’s helpful, have a good vacation - David

  16. Hi David,

How many hours do I need to study in a week to pass if I will start studying after you give me access to your note?

    I am a working professional.

  17. Hi Neha,

It is a common question but difficult to answer, because everybody starts with different knowledge. I recommend reading the source material + reading our notes + watch the videos + do the questions. That adds up to a lot of time, there is no way around it. I think something like 10 hours per week is a minimum. As the test approaches, maybe more than that per week.

The key is to start early with regular discipline. I recommend analyzing the Learning Outcomes document. We counted 588 Learning Outcomes (that’s to cover 92 readings and about 3,000 pages of reading). If you work backwards from the LO document, I think you’ll see how I get to a 10 hour/week minimum.

I probably will post an editable schedule soon, and ask for customer feedback (i.e., from people who are currently preparing). I’ll send you the link when it’s posted. Thank you for your interest

  18. Hi David,

Is it possible for me to purchase only the Study Notes from Bionic Turtle? I am not too keen on the videos and sample tests.

  19. Hi David,

I have a request. could you help me know if all what I have is really enough or is it too much… and how to go about the FRM preparation?  As I am relying totally on self study, and don’t have anyone to guide me.

I am preparing for the FRM 2007 exam. I would like to know if the follwing books I have are enough to crack the exam. I bought few of them and others I have borrowed.

    Main books:

    1. FRM handbook 2nd edition

    2. John C Hull (Options, Futures and other Derivatives 5th edition)

    3. P Jorion (Value at risk)

    4. Bruce Tuckman (Fixed Income Securities 2nd edition)

    5. Saunders, Cornett (Financial Institution Management 5th edition)

    6. Schaum’s Outlines (probability and statistics 2001)

    7. Kevin Dowd (measuring Market Risk 2003)

    8. Reto Galatti (Risk Management and Capital Adequacy)

    9. Dan galai (essentials of risk management)

    10. Schweser notes 2004 (I do know this is your competition...but need to state what all I have)

    11. Demystifying Securities ( Moody’s Investor Services)

[ I have completed 2 to 9 of the above main books corresponding to the GARP core readings).

The Extra books I have are :

    1. The Securitaztion markets handbook (by Charles Austin stone)

    2. Fixed-Income Securities and Derivatives Handbook, Analysis and Valuation (bloomberg)

    3. Fabozzi Series,Credit Derivatives Instruments, Applications, and Pricing (Mark, Frank , Moorad and Ren)

    4. Bloomberg, Hedge Fund Of Funds Investing - An Investor’s Guide

    5. Sarbanes Oxley and the board of directors (Scott green)

    6. Interest Rate risk Modelling (Sanjay, Gloria, Natalia… Wiley)

    7. Hege Fund Risk Fundamentals (Richard Horwitz)

    8. Inside the Yield Book (Bloomberg press)

    9. Credit Risk. Pricing, Measurement and Management (Duffie D....princeton university press)

    10. Finance Investment - Essentials Of Investments - 5Th Ed - Z Bodie, A Kane & A J Marcus (Mcgraw-Hill) - 2003

    11. Investment Performance Measurement (Bruce J fiebel....wiley finance)

    12. Volatility and correlation (perfect Hedger and the Fox (Ricarrdo Rebonato)

    13. Analysis of Financial Time series (RUEY S. TSAY....wiley finance)

    14. Investor Manager Analysis Frank Travers, Wiley Finance)

    15. Investors and Markets:
Portfolio Choices, Asset Prices and Investment Advice (William F. Sharpe)

(I haven’t read any of the extra books I have till now)

I have been watching the vedios you put on your site and truely find it great! (I would like to buy your vedios after I complete the assigned readings).

Do suggest me a methodology for my preparation. As Im not sure if my stratergy is full proof to crack the exam. Thanks alot. Truely appreciate it.

  20. Hi Dakshina,

As a general rule, the Quant and Market risk sections are more timeless than Credit, Operational and Investment risk. Therefore, older materials (e.g., FRM handbook section II) that review Quant & Market will be more relevant than older materials that review Credit, Ops & Investments.

Please be aware: you can download many free readings at the GARP site (e.g,. the Basel II readings). My top-of-mind reaction to your list:

    * FRM handbook 2nd edition - fine as above (e.g., probabilities) but much unnecessary material vis-a-vis the 2007 exam

    * Hull 5th Edition is okay in lieu of 6th Ed (i.e., derivatives not much changed). But this is a critical text

    * Tuckman is key (Hull + Tuckman + Jorian = much of Market risk)

    * Jorion is hopefully 3rd edition? 2nd is pretty good for your purposes but he added significant new material

    * Schaum’s probability is fine; probability hasn’t really changed in years

    * The rest of your main books are fine but each covers a small slice of 2007 (e.g., Galatti is not relevant only for the case studies chapter)

In regards to your other books, it is hard to say. The problem is you may spend time on areas that will not be tested. For example, your hedge funds of funds text; the topic is really broad so you want to dwell on the assigned readings. Also: Sarbanes Oxley is not on the agenda at all.

The challenge to your current list pertains to credit risk, operational risk, and investment risk (in my opinion). Re credit risk, you’ve got the Saunders text, but you need coverage on de Servigny and Meissner. Re operational risk: you must download the free readings and the Basel II. Add the free readings to your Dowd book (excellent), Galatti, and you are in decent shape here.Same with investment, although you still will be missing the Jeager texts (which are too expensive books, but you know you can buy the chapters at GARP digital library-yes?).

I hope that is helpful. Good luck!

  21. Thanks a zillion!! You have made my life so much easier.

Oh! I slipped to mention that I have all the GARP free readings. only thing I need to read them smile

Hull+ tuckman + Jorion (2nd edition) I have finished reading. Though many revisions are required as you say. Also, the other remaining modules are waiting to be read. Yes GARP digital library and your course will ultimately be my saving grace!!

Thank you once again for all your much needed help and best wishes.

  22. Dear David,

I have just signed up for the coming FRM exam and bought the Jorion book. I am seriously considering your material and would appreciate the following feedback:

1- Do you provide a review of the readings (I have not bought them because I will not have time to read them).
2- Will I have continuing access to the 2007 Bionicturtle material over the web. This is in case I have to re-take the test next year, for example, or simply access the material over the net whenever I need to refresh my understaning.
    Best regards, Mohammed

  23. Hi Mohammed,

1-yes, the Study Notes are outlines of the readings. In order of the 2007 Study Guide, with Learning Outcome highlighted and embedded within (please see samples, they should give you a sense)

2a-Yes, it is all online, always accessible. Some is downloadable (most movies, all movie slides which are popular as flashcards)

2b-Your purchase is good for this season. If you don’t pass and want to repurchase next year, it will be a $100 discount. Unless you write us before the exam and say something like, “I really did not have time to use your materials, please roll me over to next year” In which case, I will roll your membership over, without charge. Basically if you use the materials in a meaningful way, I would like you to pay. But I do not want you to pay for something you don’t use because time ran out. Thanks, David

  24. Hi David,

Thanks for the prompt feedback on a Saturday morning grin I understand from you that I can:
1- Download the pdf notes and print them.
2- Download most videos and watch them.

The objective here is to have max flexibility in when, where and how I prepare myself for the exam. If this is the case, then I shall register this week.

    Best regards,
    Mohammed AlQatari, CFA

  25. Mohammed - yes, correct on both counts. The videos are always viewable (streamable), in two formats. This year I added download feature and it seems to be working for customers who use it, but I don’t know 100% that all the wrinkles are ironed out. I do have customers downloading. But some of the movies are very large (e.g., 1.5 hours) so it’s a time consuming download. Also, I am doing a few brief 10 minute bursts on the more difficult topics (clusters of difficult LOs) to reinforce, and those are not really downloadable. But the primary movies are. Thanks for your interest, David

  26. Dear David,

PayPal wants me to register with them for the payment to be done. I have tried twice and failed :-( . I frankly do not wish to register my information with anyone. I would appreciate your help in knowing a second method of payment.

I want to buy your material. I don’t want to be their client. They should clear the payment and get paid for it.
    Best regards, Mohammed AlQatari, CFA

  27. Hi Mohammed,

I’ve experimented over the years but no system beats PayPal (I don’t have a second method). I have many global customers and PayPal has broad coverage. It protects both the buyer (i.e., as they buyer you have recourse if you don’t get the goods) and the seller (you would be surprised at the fraud). Thanks, David

  28. Hi Mohammed,

I’ve experimented over the years but no system beats PayPal (I don’t have a second method). I have many international customers and PayPal allows us to accept payment globally, utterly without incident. Our PayPal premium protects both the buyer (i.e., a buyer has recourse that, in my opinion, rivals credit card companies) and the seller (you would be surprised at the fraud). Not that such mechanisms are required, I refund on dissatisfaction but it has not happened - Thanks, David

  29. Hi,

just want to enquire if, Hand Book, by Jorion 3rd edition would suffice for this Nov 2007 exams.

    Pls advice

    Regards
    Abdul

  30. Abdul,

Not by itself. Even the 4th Ed handbook is not sufficient, by itself. The handbook is not a 1:1 correspondence with exam topics; for example, the handbook covers FAS 133, this year’s exam does not. And there are many learning outcomes in the exam that are not covered by the handbook.

But still, the 4th is substantially more relevant than 3rd. Your 3rd is (to simplify) more relevant “earlier” in curriculum (all of quant, much of market) and less relevant “later on” (advanced credit, operational).

  31. Hi,

Am having difficulties in using paypal. It said that the payment cannot be funded using credit card. What’s wrong?

  32. Hi,
I am thinking of preparing for the FRM 2008 exams but was wondering if it makes sense to start buying your FRM 2007 material to early preparation. The question I have is that if I do that, am I still entitled to updates do to addition of new material/syllabus for 2008 exams. Or do I wait until the FRM 2008 material are out? What is the best solution for someone who wants an early start for next year’s exams.

    Paul

  33. Hi David,

Just successfully placed the order through the website. I wonder how do I get the study note since it seems to be downloadable. Pls confirm. Thanks.

  34. bl - I sent you an email (thanks for your purchase). Access is immediate. Login at the upper-right and a YELLOW TAB labeled FRM RESOURCES will become visible. That’s the member page.

  35. Hi David,
I have the same question than Paul.
Is it possible to prepare for the 2008 exam?
I really have no time to prepare for this year. Is there a way to pay for one year and some months or do I have to wait your next material?
    Thanks

  36. Hi David,

I would like to register for your FRM online course. I have the same question as Paul and Johan. I would appear for the 2008 FRM Exams. Is it possible for me to pay for 1 year and start studying right now or do I have to wait for your 2008 course material to come out? I really hope I can start now!

    Thanks,
    Dipranil

  37. David

Paypal is appalling. After much effort, I got myself a extended user status. Now when I try to buy the FRM package it says “This payment cannot be funded with a credit card at this time”.

How I proceed forward in the absence of any directions? Any phone numbers from your side where I can call and speak?

    Thanks

    Jyothi (Ms)

    Bahrain

  38. Johan & Dipranil - If you would like to purchase the 2007 FRM preparation package, but you plan to sit for the 2008 exam, all you need to do is send me a note after your purchase (but before the 2007 exam) to that effect. Just send to or and say “I plan to sit for the 2008 exam.” Then we will tag you so that you extend into next year. It’s no problem, I welcome early-early birds!

  39. Jyothi -

Since you are hardly the first person to observe paypal difficulties, I have asked tech support to add another payment mechanism. We will deploy another option as soon as possible, and I apologize that payment is difficult.

Re the phone number, PayPal doesn’t work that way for individual transactions, they start a ticket with an email inquiry. I always get the same result: they have an algorithm that seems to reject payment from some countries. Most of my customers are outside the U.S., so this is a problem I must fix. I will send you an email update when we have an alternative payment method posted.

In the meantime, I activated you to member status, so next time you logon, the yellow tab “FRM Resources” will be visible.

    David

  40. David,

It is indeed an incredible gesture on your part to have upgraded me to Member status inspite of the Paypal problems.

I want to say this especially to all those who visit your website that (1) BT is indeed different from other resource providers in that they are really pro-student. (2) your desire to help students is not only reflected in the high quality of the study materials, but also in spirit - indeed to open up the resources without waiting for payment on my part is an extremely helpful gesture.

As soon as a second payment option is made available, kindly let me know. I am ready with my credit card.

    best regards

  41. Hi David,
Saw some of your sample material, it looks very good. I am interested in going through your course for the FRM exam but not planning to take the exam in 2007 or 2008 but maybe in 2009. So can I download all the material( the movie as well) So that I could access it whenever and wherever I like. And for how long can I access it if I download the movie and other materials to my computer? I hope I can access it forever unless I want the newer material relevant for the changed FRM curriculum.

  42. hi david,
i havent started my prep in full flow yet and am having problems with most of the concepts. saw your sample videos and was really impressed with the ease with which difficult concepts were explained. hence was seriously considering going for your package. just wanted to know that will it be enough if i just go through your material and videos to pass the exam keeping in mind the time left for the exam?

  43. Dear David,

I have less than a month to prepare for the exam and am counting on spending some time on BT material to get me across. I first tried buying your material on August 15 (see my comments above) and faced problems with PP. I have finally succumbed to your process and registered with Pay Pal and even obtained the 4-digit number as a verified user. This took some time and when I tried buying the material today, it would not accept credit payments? I am really disappointed. I really wish there is a way to pay you directly or conveniently. Tell me what to do and I will do it. I have to start really soon. I have finished the Jorion book but feel your material is better for me. I searched for a telephone number on your site without success as I wanted to speak with you. I know there will be a way because there is a will.
    Thanks! Mohammed A. AlQatari, CFA

  44. David,
I have tried to subscribe to your service for the 2008 FRM and paid by paypal, but since then nothing happend and I am not recognized as a full member. I have tried with several other mails but didn’t receive any answer. I think your website is superb and it would be very kind if you could set my account up asap, so I can start studying your material. Thanks a lot indeed!
    michael

  45. @ Gurjot:

The exam is less than four weeks away. Your prep should be in ‘full flow.’ It is difficult to answer your question so near to the test, you can probably see i have answered my variations on this question over the last few months. If you are just now starting and much is unfamiliar, it will be a lot of work. My first recommendation is to review the learning outcomes:
    http://www.bionicturtle.com/forum/viewreply/2/

@ Mohammed: I trust this was resolved last week. I see you are a member now, so apologies for difficulties paying

@ freemind: we received your payment, you are a member. Upon login, YELLOW TAB is enabled that says “FRM RESOURCES.” That’s the member page.

    Thanks, David H

  46. hi this is Maqbool from INDIA.. Bombay.I want to know about FRM.Currently I am working for a stockbroking firm with Risk Management department as a Management Trainee.I tend to enroll for FRM Exam but dont have any clue how to do it
so please will you acquaint me about above said exam.

    Regards
    Maqbool

  47. Hi David !

One important and quick question :-

Does GARP consider module-wise score for passing / failing a candidate OR is it the overall score that matters ???

I ask this question bcoz I’m planning to skip Mod V since the time is insufficient. I better focus and revise the 90% of the material which I have already studied. I have planned to just go thru the two movies for Mod V - thinking that something is better than nothing.....

However, this is possible only and only if GARP does not consider the module V score, else in that case - my hardwork for 90% will prove futile.

Please do answer me asap since then I will schedule my study plan accordingly.

    Thanks in advance,
    Chintan

  48. Dear David

I’m intending to take the FRM exam in 2008 and would like to study in advance before the 2008 exam so that i can well-prepared myself. There are a few questions which I would like to ask with you.
    1. When will the 2008 study package be available on your website?
    2. Is there any way for me to purchase the 2007 study package this year but at the same time able to access the 2008 study package next year when it’s available?
    3. If i purchase the FRM handbook this year, can I still use it for next year exam?  would it still be relevant?

  49. Hi David, I found the program and material very helpful for the MS in finance I’m actually taking. I want to purchase the study package and your recommendation will be very helpful to decide whether I should do it, even tough I’m not thinking about taking the FRM exam in a short term.

    I’ll appreciate your response
    George

  50. @ Chintan: I trust we covered this in the forum a couple days ago…

@ Jorge: the FRM program is quite specific to the FRM. I am not sure this is best path. I would love to add a more general risk product/topic but I am not quite ready. When I activate the 2008, why don’t I enable a temporary account for you, and you can visit the member page to see if it makes sense? (I’d love to have you as a member, it’s just that it’s pretty goal oriented toward passing the FRM)

    @ Amanda

    1. Thanks for asking. I don’t have a definitive date yet because I am going to open/offer the 2008 much sooner than last year - probably around Jan 1st - but I am developing the plan currently because this entails a “head start” vis a vis GARP’s published study guide/learning outcomes so I am trying to figure just how early we can start and still be relevant to a curriculum that changes 10-25% per year. I am very excited to try a new plan that gets our customers a really early start because I think it will improve the pass rates. But, bottom line, I’ve added you to the mailing list, and I expect to send information on this before November ends.

    2. Sure, if you send us a note before/after your purchase to that effect ("I am buying for 2008"), we do that. Some have already purchased for 2008; i.e., they just want to review the 2007. Just send us a note and we will tag your record.

    3. Yes, the FRM handbook will be relevant. Jorion is always relevant (The 4th edition was just published this year). However, as GARP says, it does not give 100% coverage of the exam. It both covers some topics (e.g., accounting) that are not on the exam and does not cover many topics that are on the exam. The 4th edition will be relevant for the 2008 exam, but the degree of its relevance is hard to predict because GARP will drop some readings and add other readings. Along these lines, I would deeply recommend Jorion’s book that is on the assigned reading list and will most certainly stay on the list for 2008: Jorion’s Value at Risk (3rd Edition).  To clarify, his book is 3rd edition as distinct from the 4th edition handbook. This would be my pick for the best “head start” text. After that, Hull’s derivatives text. The handbook does have sample questions, which is always a good thing, but as we (my customers and me) have discovered this year, the relevance of the handbook questions (based on prior exams, back to 2000 or so) varies. But i will give a full listing on these head start strategies in the email that will go out soon. Thanks for your interest!

  51. Thanks David, I´ll contact you as soon as 2008 study package is activated. I appreciate the temporary account offer.

    Regards!

  52. Hi David,

I am preparing this year’s FRM using only FRM handbook 3rd Ed (sadly...). I did the sample tests for 2000 and 2001 (will do 2002 and 2003) and got around 75% correct. Will 75% pass the exam?

Really wished I had committed more time and resource.. :(

    Thanks!

    Jay

  53. Hi Jay,

It’s hard for me to evaluate and answer that. One thing we have really discovered on the forum (you can see for yourself) is that prior sample tests have varying relevance. Most questions are great, some are irrelevant and some are even incorrect. Each year it is very important to study from the updated learning outcome (LO) set and study guide. But I wish you well, and if unfortunately, you need to go back in 2008: our 2008 program will start really early (around the 1st of the year). But good luck!

  54. Hi David

I am preparing for 2008 FRM exam, I don’t have any degrees from US. For the FRM exam do we have a need to evaluate the master’s degree that I have from home country.

Also if you could specify what is the eligiblity for FRM exam.

I appreciate your concern in this regard.

  55. Hello,
Is there a place where I can download the FRM study guide (may be named differently - essentially, the guide that takes one through the required readings and learning points) BEFORE signing up for the exam?
I am asking because I would like to see how difficult the material is and how much time I realistically need so that I can schedule for the exam date based on this analysis.
    Thanks,
    Mansour

  56. Hi David,
I read above about some people facing this problem with paying through paypal “This payment cannot be funded with a credit card at this time.”. Can you help me with this? I want to join as early as possible

  57. Garg:
Please see this page for the requirements, which do not have an education but rather a work experience component
The eligibility has three aspects: passing the test, GARP membership (a fee), and two years of work experience (a little more here on the work experience here)

    Mansour:
A good question, a good concern as it is easy to underestimate the exam.
Here is a copy of the 2007 Study Guide.
Here is a link to the 588 learning outcomes that constituted the 2007 Exam.
Last year, I pointed prospective candidates to this list of LOs because it illustrates the breadth of the exam (I continue to say it is a test of broad finance more than depth. 90% of working finance candidates will be familiar/expert in a section but few can be familiar with all areas. And sometimes, an expertise is helpful only for a narrow piece; e.g., you may know Basel but it is a broad test of basel, you may know option pricing theory but it is not an expert test of OPM, so I do like to emphasize the BREADTH of the exam over the depth.).
BUT PLEASE NOTE, These are 2007, I did not give you 2008 FRM information because it is not yet available and nobody has that information! We had a conference call with GARP only two days ago, and they are still working on the exact 2008 curriculum…

    Nichas:
Thanks for your interest in the membership and apologies for the difficulty. I’ll contact paypal today b/c, in theory, i should be able to accept credit cards. If i can’t resolve within a few days, I’ll enable your membership and I will figure out the alternative (the new site will have instructions for this circumstance). Thanks again for your patience.

  58. So kind of you! Have been seeing your kind gesture towards everybody all over the website! thanks again!

  59. Hi John Marvin,

Email me, I can help u.

  60. David,

I’m in my senior year about to complete a Bachelors degree in Finance and have had a couple of internships with Finance companies during my college stint. I’m studying to take the CFA Level 1 in December. Am I eligible to take the FRM?

    Thanks,
    Junaid
